***December 18 Update*** While this GoFundMe site has been a great resource for spreading the word and sharing Jessica's story, it does charge a 7.9% service fee (+$0.30) for every donation. Jessica lost her home two days ago (December 16) to the Pfeiffer Fire that continues to burn in her beloved hometown. She barely had time to grab a bag of dirty clothes and her laptop, but otherwise lost everything. Unfortunately, she was renting and did not have renters' insurance.
Since the fire started, and even as her own home burned, Jessica has been working tirelessly to help friends and neighbors protect their homes on the ridge, watching for hot spots and the flames that continue to devastate the area -- as of Tuesday night, 769 acres burned and 20% containment. And I just learned she was part of a local crew that saved multiple structures on two properties last night.
Her sister's family (husband and 1-year-old boy) also lost the home they rented down the road and all of their belongings, so the Pinney family is feeling this loss doubly. Both sisters were born and raised in Big Sur, and are the daughters of Frank Pinney, the former chief of the Big Sur Fire Brigade for 17 years. This is a family that has given much to the Big Sur community over the years and thinks of others before themselves.
These are going to be long days ahead for Jessica as she keeps helping her family and community contain this inferno and then begin the long process of rebuilding.
