Diabetic Alert Dog for Donavon

Donation protected
Donavon was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 8. As a family we knew nothing about Type 1 Diabetes and we surely knew Donavon would never be diagnosed with T1D. He was a very thin, active athlete. He never stopped moving. Baseball, Football, skateboarding, riding his bike. Slowly that all started to change. He started to become sick, sleep extra, and never felt good. When he went to his Pediatrician in Houston, she told us he needed to be rushed to the Children's Hospital because he is a Type 1 Diabetic. Heartbreaking diagnosis! All we could think was how? Donavon isn't over weight. He's active. He never sits around. He's not stuffing his face with cake. we just didn't get it. That stay at the Children's Hospital lasted 2 grueling weeks. Since Donavons diagnosis just over 3 years ago he has battled serious complications. He has had 4 extended stays in the hospital, 2 stays in the ICU clinging to survive, and only a handful of full nights if rest. Type 1 Diabetes is different in every child's body. Some simply take a small dose of insulin in the mornings and at night. Donavon is far different. He injects insulin for every meal, any time his glucose is high, and a 24hour dose at 8pm. His medicine doesn't always work, and you can't tell that his insulin is bad until he's sick. This last stay in the hospital was as close to a coma as you can get. The doctors trying to keep him awake by all means possible. His breathing was very short and labored. His body was shutting down as he went into DKA. And it all happened in a matter of hours. Donavon needs someone to watch over him 24/7. A companion when he gets sick. Acompanion to help give him a better more normal way of life. Many people know that he's mostly alone with his mother and its a full time job checking him at night. Diabetic Alert Dogs of America is donavons saving grace. They will select a service dog specific to Donavon straight from a young pup. The Diabetic Alert Dog will be raised with Donavons specific glucose scents from a very young age. It will be able to alert when his glucose is high and low. It will be trained to go get help if he doesn't respond. there's a long list of tasks a diabetic alert dog can accomplish. PLEASE SHARE WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS. ALL ARE ELIGIBLE. YOU DON'T HAVE TO DONATE TO HELP HIM. SHARE SHARE SHARE!!
