Go Big Mo AND Go Home!

John Heim AKA Big Mo AKA Big Papa was out watering some plants on a Tuesday morning when he tripped over a flower pot and in a freak accident he hit his neck just wrong and instantly could not move anything from the shoulders down. He spent some time at the neuro ICU at the University of Iowa hospital then was moved to St. Lukes Rehab. He is now in an amazing Long term physical rehab facility strictly for traumatic brain and spinal injuries in Omaha called QLI. Since this fall happened he has gone from absolutely no movement to being able to feed himself and wiggle around a little bit. He is continuing to make great progress. The problem lies with his insurance. They are covering AT MOST a month at this facility when most people will be here for at least 3 months, but usually 6 months. There is hope that he will be able to be independent again and maybe even be able to play the bass again but this hope dies with out insurance coverage. QLI is amazing and exactly what he needs but to pay out of pocket it is $1300 a day or $40,000 a month. Even after he leaves here he will most likely need a power wheelchair and a ramp and to make his house handicap accessible. It’s crazy (and frustrating) to think an insurance company can dictate the outcome of a person’s life just with their unwillingness to pay. So this is where I ask for your help (because my parents would never ask for it themselves). I have had visions of my father teaching my boys how to play the bass, taking them camping, playing catch and just being the grandpa to them like he was a dad to me. These visions were all taken away in an instant but there is hope they may return. I ask for your help because even though this injury does not define him or change who he is as a person it does change his future (and that of all of those around him) and with a little help he may be able to restore some of the dreams and normalcy that he hopes for.
