Sramabimani Sansadaya stands for "Dignity in Labour". We are a non-profit organization whose mission it is to empower their target groups at the grassroots level, as education that enables freedom is our goal. By utilizing women and children as catalysts the hope is that they will begin to work in cooperation with similar groups emerging throughout the country so that together they may bring about a more just and humane society. The involvement of women also allows for the participation of the whole family in the economic, political and cultural activities both at the micro and macro levels. This inclusive approach to gender roles contributes to the empowerment of society as a whole.
At present Sramabimani not only works with Free Trade Zone women workers and children but also with child workers, workers of BOI factories, school dropouts, students, youth, adult men and women. In addition village communities are given education to freedom by conducting programs for school going children on life education, for school drop outs literacy workshops and for adult functional education. About 1600 families are now involved with Sramabimani. Of them, there are a selected leadership of 25 child leaders, 25 youth leaders, 25 student leaders and 25 women leaders. About 150 children are involved in helping each other to improve their studies and developing skills. The adult groups are getting organized on the basis of cultural, environmental and consumer issues. The "˜Vikasitha' mini bank system has been started with every group of women, youth and children while the "˜Sadana' consumer system is operated within the village groups.
Sramabimani engages in bi-weekly or monthly meetings with each target group in order to continue identifying new problems, past successes and potential future solutions. We also regularly organize practical programs such as children's clubs, cultural and health activities, as well as skills classes. Regular workshops for training in leadership are also conducted so that local individual can bring about positive change for the families and surrounding neighborhood, thus forming a core group of strong leaders with deeper awareness and commitments.
