Colleen is a 33 year old single mother of three beautiful girls, she has been my best friend for nearly 25 years and I don't want to lose her. She has been battling Metastatic Cervical Cancer Stage 3B for almost four years, has undergone two rounds of chemotherapy and radiation so far, has been hospitalized on countless occasions, and now it has infiltrated her lymph system. While this latest news means that Colleen will never be cancer free, with the proper treatment it is manageable and she should be able to live a long life with her girls.
Colleen is currently unable to work and survives on a small monthly disability benefit. She is covered by Medicare and pays a monthly co-insurance which has covered a majority of her medical bills. Unfortunately, she has just learned that it will only cover 80% of her newest round of chemotherapy. This amounts to thousands of dollars per infusion and she will have 3 infusions per month for at least 6 months.
Cancer affects her life on a daily basis. It causes her severe pain and fatigue which, in turn, means less time with her kids. Because the ureter of her kidney is being crushed by the cancer, she has had to deal with the day to day inconvenience of a percutaneous nephrostomy. In basic terms, this is a small, soft plastic tube that enters the skin in the side of your lower back to drain urine from the kidney. The purpose of this tube is to relieve pressure in the kidney from urine that has backed up into it. It drains into a bag that is worn on her leg. She has been stared at, pointed at, and had people speak about it as if she wasn't right there. The hope is that this newest round of chemotherapy will shrink the cancer enough to be able to remove it.
Colleen is a proud person and doesn't like to ask for help, but she needs it. There is no way she can afford the chemotherapy she so desperately needs. Please find it in your hearts to donate something, anything, to help her.
