World Sailing Adventurer

My son, Mason, wants to sail around the world! The past two summers he has done some groundwork/early learning, and this summer he wants to take it up a notch, with your help!

When I asked Mason why he wants to sail around the world he said I love sailing, and, here he tapped the side of his head with his index finger, and said, to learn, about history, people, architecture, the world! He's not wanting to win a race, get a trophy, or be the first to do X, Y or Z...He wants to learn, live, and explore sailing life around the world.

So, here we are - here I am asking if you would like to help Mason continue on his journey to sail around the world. First things first...2 1/2 years ago he learned to sail at a summer day camp. 1 1/2 years ago he helped teach younger kids how to sail in an outdoor leadership program, 1/2 a year ago - last summer, he participated in the outdoor leadership program again, and counselor in training programs at several other camps where he continued to develop his leadership skills at a sports camp and circus camp (where he also lifeguarded at the lake).

For just two weeks last summer, Mason got to be just a regular camper - on a Tall Ship, sailing around the Catalina Islands! He and about 30 other kids lived on the ship, ate, slept, studied, had fun! He swam with dolphins - in the ocean - kayaked into a cave of sleeping seal lions (until they woke up and started barking!), had night watch while sailing at night, and got to see real bioluminescence ( the animated version is in that movie The Life of Pi). He had such a wonderful adventure. He came back excited to go back again, and learn more about sailing, oceans and the world.

Our family and friends who gave their financial support, teachers and adult leaders in the community who gave time and letters of recommendation, and the camp with it's scholarship program, to you, I say Thank You for his wonderful 2013 summer. THANK YOU!

This coming summer, 2014, I want to continue to support Mason in his quest to learn more sailing, and one day sail around the world. AND I'M INVITING YOU TO HELP ME! Mason would like to go to the Tall Ship camp again, and one other sailing camp. This new camp is in the Virgin Islands, where he would be sailing around the islands, with 10 or so more kids his age as part of a fleet of yachts. While on the yacht, he would earn internationally recognized sailing certifications and a scuba certification and study marine biology.

These camps are quite costly! Tall Ships costing $2895, Virgin Islands sailing camp costing $5270. We will be applying for scholarships, as usual, but even if we are awarded scholarships, they are only partial scholarships, and then there's airfare and passport!

So, there you have it. My son learner/adventurer and one day world traveler - by sail!

In advance, I thank you with my heart, for your support and generosity in helping my son, move forward in a positive direction in his life.

If you would like more information about sending your kids to summer camps and applying for scholarships, or about these camps in particular, I am happy to share my experience with you.
