Gayatri Devi Dasi is a very special disciple of Srila Prabhupada. She has been an inspirational Mother for many devotees throughout the years. Gayatri pioneered the Gainesville Krishna House starting in 1970. She was with the small crew of devotees who helped to provide for a wonderful visit when Srila Prabhupada came to Gainesville in 1971 to speak on campus at the University of Florida.
In the early days the temple was located on Deport Ave. near campus. Students would flock to the Krishna Temple on a regular basis and Gayatri would personally attend to their needs and warmly welcome everyone with her delicious and profuse Prasadam offerings. She was famous for her story telling from Srimad Bhagavatam and Caitanya Charitamrita as she would captive the guests with her enthusiastic renditions of the pastimes of Krishna and His associates.
Her amazing cooking was the original inspiration for the famous Krsna Lunch Program that continues to this day, feeding thousands of students Prasadam on UF campus for over 40 years. Many devotees in the Alachua community and around the world took to Krishna Consciousness largely due to the loving kindness and motherly affection she offered them as they embarked on their devotional journey.
Gayatri is very dear to Piscima, Srila Prabhupada's sister, (Bhavatarini) who she served in Mayapur. Piscima reciprocated with Gayatri offering her intimate friendship. Their friendship continued through the years by letter correspondence. Every year at the time of the Mayapur meetings of temple leadership Piscima would anticipate the arrival of Gayatri and if she did not arrive as usual, Piscima would be asking about her and be concerned about Gayatri's well being. Their affectionate relationship endured until Piscima passed away.
Gayatri has won the hearts of many devotees and sannyasis by her caring service and compassionate motherly concern. You may have fond memories of you personal experience as a new devotee with Mother Gayatri. If you do please share these affections in your comments below.
Now Mother Gayatri is in need of some help and special care. In recent years she has been living near the Los Angeles community of devotees but due to health and other reasons she has become increasingly isolated. A few of her old friends have come forward and volunteered to organize her care but it requires relocating her. She needs to be move to Alachua Community to receive personal care from the very devotees who thrived on the love she gave. For her physical, emotional and spiritual well-being and health we are assisting her in her need to be moved to the Alachua community. This move will facilitate a stable and enriching environment for Gayatri to continue serving Srila Prabhupada with her loving talents.
Gayatri has recently been hospitalized in Saint Johns Health Center in Los Angeles in order to undergo a serious operation. We are requesting Gayatri's friends and well wisher to send prayers and a get well card to lift her spirits. As soon as possible following the surgery she will be relocated to Florida.
