Marissa's Mission to East Africa

5I've grown up in a family who selflessly gives to others. My dad volunteered at a homeless shelter for years, sleeping with the homeless to assure they had a safe nights sleep. When I was in third grade, my mom and I started a volunteer club called "Giving Girls" where my friends and I would do something good for individuals or organizations once a month. That foundation of giving has been solidly planted within me and sparked a fire to help others. From my first mission trip to Camden, New Jersey, I knew this was a seed I wanted to nourish and grow for the rest of my life.
I actively sought out an undergraduate institution that valued service. At Alvernia I attended numerous Alternative Breaks and Mission Trips to help others in a variety of locations throughout the United States. In those 4 years I learned and studied quite a bit about social justice and the challenges others face but now I want to reach out beyond my country and help those in need around the world and have decided to go to East Africa.
I am excited to share with you that this dream is coming true! Next May, upon my graduation from IUP I will be going on a three week journey with the Apostles of Jesus Missionaries to Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda to help children and adults who are affected and infected with HIV/AIDS. I will be participating in the Come & See Mission. I will become quickly immersed in the African culture and help those who need physical healing or companionship.
Despite the financial costs of an international service trip, I feel called to have this experience before I enter the professional world. I am certain that the things I will experience in Africa and the people I will encounter will influence my life in ways I cannot imagine. I am prepared for the sacrifices I will have to make in order to answer this calling, but I need your help.
I humbly ask you to accompany me on my journey and consider helping me achieve this goal with a financial contribution. Although I have been saving for this trip for the past year an overseas mission is an expensive investment. Your donation will help me cover some of the costs for the trip in regards to vaccines and preventative medicine to enter the countries and cost of travel through these countries.
If you are unable to contribute financially, I would be very grateful for your prayers, because a trip like this requires more than just monetary support. Thank you very much for your spiritual or financial support, and thank you for being a part of my wonderful journey!
