We are reaching out to our community for a project we need help with. Our project is to allow us to continue our program all year long with a covered arena to allow us to help improve the lives of children and adults with special needs. The project cost will be $77,000. The overall goal that we expect to continue to meet with your grant is to provide a covered arena. Allowing our specials needs population of York County to continue to benefit from our therapeutic program all year long with rain and extreme temperatures. This grant will allow us to purchase a pole barn that will allow us to serve our clients continuously which we are unable to do now.
RideAbility is a non-profit organization in York County, South Carolina offering equine assisted activities to children and adults with special needs to promote the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being of both participants and their families. RideAbility serves riders starting at 4 years old and as of now our oldest participant is 72 years old. We serve a variety of families and over 50% require funding to participate.. Through our amazing community Tuition Assistance is available for them to participate and benefit. Our goal is that no family is turned away due to financial challenges.
At RideAbility we serve individuals with physical, mental and developmental disabilities. These include those with autism, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, muscular dystrophy, visual impairments, hearing impairments, traumatic brain injuries, PTSD, veterans, multiple sclerosis, sensory integration issues, ADHD and many others
A covered arena will allow us to serve our riders during rain and hot weather in the summer. As we know the weather we experience here in South Carolina can cause cancellations of lessons and therefore our riders cannot reach goals we set at that time. The many goals reached are described in the narrative below.
With a covered arena we are able to continue provide lessons year round no matter what weather we experience. Through therapeutic horseback riding, the mission is for clients to gain physical, emotional, and mental rewards. Physical rewards include improvements in flexibility, balance, and muscle strength. In addition to the physical benefits, riding naturally also boosts self-esteem and confidence promoting a heightened sense of self-worth. RideAbility sets goals with the clients to meet the following criteria: balance/strength, focus/attention, socialization, riding/horsemanship skills, and improved confidence and self-esteem.
