The typhoon that hit the Philippines on November 8, 2013 is the worst to have ever hit land, and it has left thousands dead and entire villages have been wiped out...
Unfortunately, our grandmother's caretaker, Jane, was one of the thousands who lost her home. She comes from the island of Panay, from the Capiz area, and it battled a major part of the storm. The good news is that her husband and 3 children are safe, but sadly, their home was entirely destroyed.
Jane has been caring for our grandmother for about 5 years now, and has been working hard every month to send money to her family. Just a few months ago, she went to the Philippines for the first time since 2008, and used the money she had saved to improve her home and buy important appliances such as a fridge, microwave, washing machine, electric fan -- every day items which we take for granted.
Jane's home has always been subject to flooding, because it was built out of very fragile, unstable material that could easily give way to storms. During her time in the Philippines, she made sure to build another, smaller home that was elevated in case her other home got flooded. Unfortunately, both homes got washed away in the typhoon.
She's been distraught at the thought of having to start over and rebuild everything. She has very little money, no assets, and is the only one in her family working to support the education of her children.
Our family has promised her that we will help her rebuild a better, stronger home so that she will (hopefully) never have to face the tragedy of losing her home again.
With our support, she is planning on building a home that is 5 x 6 meters, enough to fit a couple of rooms, a kitchen, and small salon area. We've managed to raise almost half the amount in just a few days, and we're hoping to raise the rest with your support online!
