Support for Robert Moore

Robert Moore was admitted to the ICU at DCH in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, November 16 with severe lung inflammation and infection from a serious strain of the flu, which developed into double bacterial pneumonia. He was put on a ventilator and sedated heavily on at DCH. On Monday, November 18 they said that he was not getting better and not responding to treatment, so they transferred him to CICU at UAB Medical Center in Birmingham to put him on a lung and heart bypass machine called ECMO. This machine works for this heart and lungs so that he can rest and his lungs can heal and fight the infection. There have been many ups and downs so far: he developed pulmonary edema, which caused a build up of fluid on his lungs; he was put on dialysis because his kidneys were not processing fast enough to get the fluid off of his lungs and out of his body; he had to have a tracheotomy to allow for a safer, cleaner connection to the ventilator; and he had to have a CT scan to rule out any brain injuries or damage such as a bleed or stroke. Praise the Lord that the CT scan came back clear, he is off blood pressure medication and some of the fluid is off his lungs.

There is still a tough and long road ahead. The goal is to get him off the ECMO machine and then wean him off the ventilator, but to do that, he first has to wake up and show that his body can breathe without the machine. They have taken him off the sedation medication twice and he did not wake up. Please pray that his lungs and body will be healed, that he will gain the strength to wake up and that there will be no major complications or bleeds as he fights the infection.

On Saturday, November 23, after one full week on heavy sedation medication, Rob's heart went into atrial fibrillation. His body is so stressed because all he is going through. Rob is stable but still critical. We have a long road ahead. And the only thing that matters is Rob getting better. People are asking how they can help. My biggest need right now is being able to be at the hospital especially right now in this very critical stage so funding for lodging and travel are my biggest need. Being close to hospital is very important. Rob's needs change from moment to moment and they want someone close. That someone is me. And I hate the fact I may have to travel back and forth and not be here close every moment I can.

But my reality is setting in... I am trying desperately to find a way to pull myself together and to be here for Rob. Rob and I don't like to ask for help but this is one time I have no choice. And I know a lot of you want to know what you can do.

So my immediate need is funds to be here at the hospital. As for things at home I will need help with cleaning before Rob gets home. I am overwhelmed. And Rob is gonna need a lot of care and a clean environment to return home to.
