Dear Friends,
I am going to Tanzania to volunteer at Red Sweater Project for 6 months beginning in January 2014. I will be working as an ESL/ English teacher as Mungere Secondary School in Mungere Village.
Red Sweater Project (www.redsweaterproject.org ) provides affordable, accessible and advanced educational opportunities for children in rural Tanzania. Many children in Tanzania aren't able to finish their high school education due to families' lack of funds to pay for tuition, school uniforms and books. In addition, there is a shortage of schools and teachers in Tanzania and children living in rural areas have to travel long distances to get to school (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-23239800) or live in dangerous accommodations away their families to attend expensive boarding schools (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12640342).
As well as regular classes such as English or Math, Red Sweater Project provides:
· access to safe water and sanitation
· basic health services with health-based education and community outreach
· computer and internet access using renewable energy
· school garden and dining facilities serving two nutritious meals each school day (www.redsweaterproject.org, 2013)
Since I believe that education can be an effective way to promote gender equality and reduce poverty (http://blogs.reuters.com/great-debate/2013/09/25/why-girls-education-can-help-eradicate-poverty/), I am excited about the opportunity to provide assistance to Red Sweater Project as an English teacher. I would greatly appreciate your help in covering some of my expenses to do this. I am very grateful for whatever help you can provide.
My major expenses include my flight to Tanzania, immunizations/vaccines, personal living expenses, and health insurance. Red Sweater Project provides a place to stay at the volunteer house but I'll need to contribute to the household food expenses.
Thank you all so much for your support!
Love, Rachel
