Funds: Will be used to PAY for school lunches or balances kids can’t afford.
When needed: New school year/years the system won’t do what is right.
Teachers and Administrators tell us to be sure to eat or to simply do our best to eat a healthy meal before class or an exam. They also tell us they will provide the tools we need to pass the class and the exams.
But, what if the most important tool a kid needs is food? THIS IS MY WHY????
When I was in middle school going to the cafeteria was a surprise each day. We had a selection of different foods to choose from that were sometimes nutritionally balanced depending on the options chosen. But for some, options are limited depending on whether they have the money to pay or NOT. Calls would go out to parents alerting them lunch balances were either zero or not enough to cover their child’s lunch. If money was not paid the kids would receive the items shown in the picture or they did not eat at all. Could we have at least toasted the bread for grilled cheese?
Issue: One day a kid in front of me in the cafeteria, entered his student ID number for lunch. The lunch lady advised him he did not have money on his account. In front of everyone, she snatched the tray of food, threw it in the TRASH, and began telling the student “you know you do not have money in your account, why would he go through the line and fix a plate of food.” She then told him to get out of the way. This affected me then, and it still does. It’s embarrassing, degrading, and takes away a kid’s dignity. We have feelings too. How do we feel? Just another form of BULLYING!, from kids and yes, the adults. Have you ever had food snatched from you and thrown away in front of others and you’re hungry?
What this means to me: Each day pounds and pounds of food are thrown away in the dumpster just behind cafeterias all over the country! Sometimes a school lunch is all a kid might have to eat for the day. Why can’t the kids eat that food? Why must they be embarrassed in front of their peers and teachers? Why are they called out by other students when everyone knows if your lunch looks like the lunch posted above, you have no money and could not afford lunch? When will lunch be free for everyone?
We feed children and adults free during the summer months and NOW free during the PANDEMIC. I would really appreciate your HELP paying for lunches or balances left each month during the school year so the kids can continue to do well in class and maybe have one less thing to worry about.
PS: To the credit of the lunch ladies, there are days when they take money from their own pockets to pay for lunches, but that too is against the rules.
