Austin Hancock's Medical Fund

Austin Hancock was taken to the ER July 26th with fear of having meningitis. Without knowing if it could be bacterial or viral, he was checked into the hospital and quarentined almost immediately. A spinal tap verified that Austin had meningitis of some kind. After 48 hours of intensive treatment by antibiotics and constant supervision, bacterial meningitis was thankfully ruled out. After an additional three days in the hospital, he was diagnosed with viral meningitis caused by a tick borne disease called Ehrlichia and discharged. After yet another ten days, Austin finished his antibiotics and has began recuperating, more than 20 days before his symptoms began. Austin had to miss ten days of work due to his ailment, only adding to the financial predicament.

Austin is moving into his off campus housing at University of Maryland College Park towards the end of August so that he may begin studying for his undergraduate degree in civil engineering. He has already expended his savings towards the goal of earning an education, and this massive unexpected event has left him with bills that he cannot pay.

$810 is required immediately for payment of the physician fees, while the remaining $11,370 can be payed in a more flexible manner. He did not qualify for any financial aid through the hospital, even though he comes from an underprivileged family.

Any donations will help Austin in a very serious way. If unable to pay he will be required to take a part time job while at school to pay his medical bills, where his time would best be directed towards his studies. It is important that he keeps his GPA in order to maintain his scholarship that grants him tuition.

Until this point, Austin has studied at Harford Community College where he earned his two year degree in engineering. He was one of only 19 students who graduated that maintained a 4.0 GPA during their time at Harford. He was able to earn scholarships due to his hard work and plans to use at least $3000 of his scholarship money towards the bill, even though he will need the money for spring semester of next year.

This GoFundMe page is unfortunately a last resort because Austin's family is unable to help him pay the bill at this time.

Thank you all very much for your help and consideration.
