We are Moira Hahn (artist) and Mark Hotchkiss (electronics engineer), a married couple in their 60s. We live in Long Beach, CA.
16 days ago, we received an inconspicuous letter from a company we'd never heard of. Fortuitously, Mark opened it, only to learn that the company, Synergy Development Services, a contractor for AT&T, wants to install a 5G wireless tower 25-feet from our bedroom window.
We learned that the tower had been permitted almost three weeks before by the City of Long Beach. We were forced to pay over $100 just to have our appeal letter accepted by the City.
I (Moira) have a well-documented, long history of multiple, chronic, neurological disabilities, including cluster headaches, migraines, unilateral deafness, chronic ear infections and dysfunction in my hearing ear, electro-sensitivity, and a close family history of cancer, including brain cancer. I retired early, from a tenured, full-time teaching position, due to chronic, unresolved head pain. My doctor considers me disabled, by the terms set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). He has proposed that a "reasonable accommodation" would be to ensure that the 5G tower not be installed within 1,000 feet of our home.
5G cell towers emit electro-magnetic radiation at frequencies and intensities that have particularly acute negative impacts on the health of children, the disabled and the elderly. We live in the middle of a city block composed of young families and retirees, immediately flanked on each end by an elementary school and a junior college. 5G cell antenna towers do not belong near homes and schools, and do not belong in this neighborhood.
We've written and delivered our appeal. The City hasn't provided a hearing date yet, or any of the cell tower project information that we asked it for six days ago, in order to prepare for our hearing.
If the 5G tower is installed, our home of 20 years will become uninhabitable.
