Irene is the Mother of 3 cherished children in our community. She was taken unlawfully from her home by ICE agents on Tuesday, February 18th. All three of her children are profoundly deaf and communicate via American Sign Language. Two of her children are in the Columbia Regional Program at Creston and her oldest is at Mt. Tabor Middle School. Irene is the only person her children can communicate with at home, as she is the only adult in the family who signs.
Irene was taken from her home through a manipulative tactic used by ICE agents who came to her home claiming they were looking for someone else who had committed a crime. When she said she wasn’t that person and didn’t know anyone by that name, ICE agents asked her to prove it by showing them her ID. When she said she didn’t have an ID, she was immediately taken from her home and put into ICE custody. She is now in a detention center in Tacoma, WA awaiting deportation proceedings.
She is a beloved and devoted mother, and her family needs her desperately. Her husband and children are shocked and scared. The family has retained a lawyer who has filed for a bond hearing. Legal costs are considerable and the bond will be set between $8,000 and $16,000. The family needs to raise AT LEAST $15,000 to cover the bond, legal fees and the father’s lost wages during this time. Funds are needed immediately, as the court will ask for the bond money at the hearing, which could take place as early as February 24th.
