Stage 4 Glioblastoma

In May of 2016 my family & I were told that my dad, Mike Eberhardy, had a cancerous tumor located in the frontal lobe on the left side of his brain. Fortunately, we were told that the doctors were able to operate & remove the tumor successfully. He then went through chemotherapy and radiation therapy until the rest of the tumor subsided.
In October of 2017, My dad started to lose feeling in his left leg unexpectedly, which is when we had discovered a second tumor. At this time he was diagnosed with Giloblastoma Multiforme (GBM). GBM is one of the most aggressive & also very rare types of brain cancer. Due to the location and the risks involved, there is no way to operate. The doctors started him on chemo again to help minimize his swelling. Eventually, he was able to get some of feeling back in his leg but it wouldn’t ever fully function like it once did.
In March of 2018, my dad had lost feeling of almost the whole left side of his body. When they did the MRI scan, it showed the the tumor had grown a significant amount since the end of February. The growing tumor has now caused paralysis on the left side of his body after growing twice the size of what it first was one month prior. He will be continued to receive the chemotherapy to help slow down the growth of the tumor, and to help minimize the swelling. He stayed at a skilled nursing facility to help with daily cares & extensive physical therapy, until his doctor cleared him to go back home.
In May of 2018, my dad had a routine MRI to see how the tumor was reacting to the chemo therapy. The doctor showed the MRI to my dad & he was shocked. The MRI was clear, the tumor was gone. This brought so much relief & joy to our family. My dad was cleared to drive again & he was living a normal life once again. But unfortunately, it didn’t stay like that for long.
On July 26th 2018, my dad had a seizure. He was taken to the emergency room & admitted to the hospital. The MRI results were devastating to our family. The tumor had returned, along with 5-6 smaller ones throughout his whole brain. The disease has taken over his whole brain. He is no longer receiving chemo therapy. My dad has been moved to a hospice house where he is as comfortable as he can be until this aggressive disease takes his precious life away.
GBM patients between ages 45-54 only have about an 8% chance of living more than five years after being diagnosed. Although researchers are unaware of what causes this type of invasive cancer, our family is working together to create awareness of glioblastoma.
Over the past few years, this has become a very difficult and emotional time for our family. All proceeds raised will be going to my dad’s wife, Carla, for medical bills, living expenses, lost wages and hospice care. We immensely thank all those who donate, it is greatly appreciated!
