Hello sweet friends and family

Our dear friend, Susan Carberry, could use our help along with LOTS of prayers.

In April of 2021, Susan learned that she had Brain Stem Glioma in her spinal cord and began her battle against cancer.

There were lengthy delays in receiving proper medical care, including the tests and necessary scans, so her doctors could determine what they were dealing with. Final approval for surgery was painstakingly long, as her Covered California health insurance denied proper health care from day one, but finally, in July of 2021, her surgery was approved! Her doctor forewarned Susan, her family and close friends that it would be an invasive and dangerous surgery because the tumor was sitting right at the base of Susan’s spinal cord and right below the brain stem. Thankfully Susan made it through surgery, but with some challenges, one being her entire right side was paralyzed. After months of physical therapy, there was no improvement. Because Susan is a champion, she went to work and continued decorating wedding cakes, cupcakes and treats while learning to use her non-dominant left hand.

We all had high hopes of the cancer being 100% removed, but unfortunately, this was not the outcome. Susan's cancer has continued to spread, leaving her bedridden and unable to be at the shop. Over this last year, Susan's shop, The Cake Cottage, has been kept open with the help of amazing friends like Val, Susan's brother Pete, Cindy, Carolyn, Allison, Evonne, Kevie, and myself. Still, sadly we'll be closing the shop after the first of the year, which will result in more financial hardship for her family.

We are starting a GoFundMe account to help cover some of the medical costs that her insurance won’t cover to keep her comfortable at home with in-home care.

It is our hope that we can provide her with a little financial peace of mind so that she can focus on her family.
