Because No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

Please consider helping Janice Ritter, animal rescuer, replace her stolen car. Let me tell you a story of two of my friends, Liz and Janice. Unknown to each other before last night, but soon one became the other's hero. My friend, Liz, put out word Friday afternoon her older dog had slithered through a gap in a newly installed fence and had gone on the lam. Friends started searching immediately but Bailey remained missing through a below freezing night. The next morning more friends descended and we hung flyers, and canvassed the neighborhood and shelters. It was late afternoon and still no word. As a last ditch effort, I reached out to my friend from college, Janice Ritter, who I knew spent her free time rescuing cats and asked her to keep an eye out for Bailey as she made her rounds. Since she was in that general area, she selflessly took time out of her day to ask around a bit. Within the hour, she followed a few leads and found Bailey. While Janice was calming Bailey towards the back of a community park her car was stolen from the lot. Of course, Janice had just purchased the car this week, after her old car's engine blew up. Even worse news, in the car was a cat in a carrier who had just undergone surgery. Liz called with the good news that she was reunited with Bailey and the bad news that as a result Janice had lost her car and a cat. I raced to the scene and sat with Janice as she filed the police report. Now Janice and I have never been real close friends, and honestly hadn't seen each other in quite a few years. But as we drove around the city last night tracking down a spare set of keys to her house, and chatting in the car, I discovered that Life had put her "on the ropes" lately. In fact, the more we talked in the car and later over dinner, the more I discovered that Life had not only put her "on the ropes" but had succeeded in getting her down and had been throwing punches with wild abandon. It seems last night's events, may have been the steel-toe-booted kick to the jaw. A series of car accidents, health issues, employment changes, and shady mechanics have dominated her life for the last couple years. But she found her joy in rescuing animals, and that kept her going. As I dropped her off last night, feeling woefully unable to express my gratitude for saving Liz's fur baby she says "if someone would have told me that I could save this dog but as a result I would lose my car, I wouldn't have changed any decision I made today". Sometimes the selfless acts, the good deeds, and the big-hearted people, who take time to care need the help. If you can spare a few dollars to help Janice, it would be much appreciated.
