Remembering Hussain Ali-Khan

Hoss was an incredible human being who impacted many lives through his presence, wisdom, and kindness. Unfortunately, his life was cut short by liver cancer on November 1st, 2022.

We, the Landmark Team Management and Leadership Program community, have started this fundraiser to support his family to manage some of the medical costs associated with his treatment. Your generosity will make a huge impact! Also, if you would like to share how much Hoss made a difference in your life, please share below. Thank you for your time, consideration, and support.

Victoria Torres Bolanos: "Hoss was an incredible human being. He listened for people's greatness. He related to me as who I created myself to be. He was funny, sweet, kind, and loving. To me he was a rock an unshakable stand. The ripples he caused in this universe will forever flow."

Josh Tan: "I want to acknowledge Hoss for being a powerful T2. I will remember Hoss as being enrolling, reliable, and fun to be with."

"Davidson Hang: "Hoss was a mentor, he loved his family so much, I'll never forget our deep conversations. The minutes passed by so quickly. I'm sad I wasn't able to have a steak with him."

To provide some context -Steven Gable wrote "Hello everyone: Many of you know Hussain Ali-Khan. For his mil col buds, he was a member of 2 Squadron at Royal Roads Military College from 81-82 until we moved to 1 Squadron at the Royal Military College of Canada, where he graduated in 1984. Following his military service, he moved to NJ, where he has lived for many years. Hussain has been dealing with a cancer diagnosis for the past few years. Unfortunately, he is at that stage where he will likely move into hospice care soon. He was previously in hospice but rallied and came home. This is pretty typical for cancer patients. They tend to rally but then enter a final stage where their health declines. Hussain hasn't eaten since Monday past, is in a great deal of pain, and is often very tired. I also spoke with Nadira, his wife. She felt comfortable telling us about their financial situation due to Hussain's illness. Even though they both have health insurance, they currently face healthcare costs of $124,000. That number will continue to grow as Hussain enters the final stages of the disease. To try and help the family manage these costs, we have started this GoFundMe to assist the family in addressing some of these costs. I am not suggesting that we will be able to cover all the costs, or even most of those costs, but as Nadira said, anything will help. If you can, please donate. I know the family will truly appreciate it."

George Mow: "Hussain Ali-Khan? When I saw his photo on the page, it was at first with disbelief.
I once handed Hussain a box of marbles labeled "New Times Building Project Official Floor Level Checker" (In stock at Toys R' US), while he tried passionately to argue and complain about floor levelness (not to be confused with floor flatness) during one of our many construction status meetings. I broke his concentration as he continued to speak and dump the floor level checker (marbles) on the conference room table.
That is only one of many memories I have of Hussain.
It is with great shock and sadness to learn he is gone."

Jesse Giordano: "He was an amazing man."

Clare: "I'm heartbroken for his family. He was a funny guy. He tried to get my bf at the time to propose to me by offering him incentives. He threw in Annie Lebovitz. My now husband played hard to get. We talk about that every anniversary."

Claira LaRosa: "So sorry to hear this sad news. Hussain was a great guy. He loved working on the new NYT building. One day he took a colleague and me to the top of the unfinished building. Very exciting and very kind of him. He will be missed. Condolences to his family."

Len Pilon "Oh my, I am so sad to hear this news. Hoss brought me onboard to the BNY Mellon account with CBRE. I always appreciated his energy and passion for innovation. Grace and peace to the entire family!"

Naoko Oguro: "Oh my, I was about to reach out to see how things were going, and sad to see this. Hussain was our client while building of during The NY Times and he is one of those people I wanted to be associated with forever because he was so fair, inspirational, and smart. I’m really sad to hear this. May he rest in peace, and thank you for the gift you left behind of teaching me a valuable lesson early in my career."

Audrey Wilson: "Hussain was a kind and thoughtful person who made the effort to connect even though we went to high school together. Lots of good memories. Peace to his Family and all who miss him."

Karen Guenther: "I taught Hussain during high school and was his Debate coach. Hussain was a precocious student, deep thinker, an activist, and became a good friend during the years following graduation. It has been so great to reacquaint with him over the phone during the past months. I was very sad to learn that despite much research on possible ways to slow the cancer and many valiant efforts on Hussain’s part, cancer won. Hussain’s passing is a great loss."

"Hoss,
A truly kind gentle man- with family always present in his thoughts even if we were working on tough problems.
My condolences to his family and all of his many friends and admirerers."
-Gene

"I’m so sorry to hear this! Hoss was a great guy and I’m so sorry to hear he is gone so young! My thoughts are with his wife, son, and daughter!!!! He was an enthusiastic man who spoke his mind! Smart man with an infectious smile gone too soon!" -Dan Gaffney

MaryAnne Gilmartin: "The world lost one of the good guys with the passing of HAK. In our business, he will always be remembered as one of the most decent, charming and collaborative partners in the industry. His love of family was evident in all of his words and deeds Sending peace and healing to Nadira & family."

Ariana Ahmadzadeh:" I got to know Hoss on Team 1. He made a huge impact on my understanding of men's communication and developing trust in them. We became really good friends on Team. I loved our conversations, we always had so much fun together and were always laughing. Except at TDO where we were both miserable haha! Even at TDO we laughed about and made fun for ourselves :) Hoss was a decent, sweet, caring and solid man. I felt like I could discuss so many issues I was dealing with, from dating to career to family. He was non-judgmental, so accepting and so supportive.

When I was leaving NYC I mentioned to Hoss that I needed to get my apartment ready. Part of what it needed was spackling which I didn't really know how to do. Hoss offered to do the spackling for me!!! He went to the hardware store, bought everything he needed and spent his weekend afternoon doing all of this for me. At the time I was a single woman and this was such a big help and so appreciated. I'll never forget that. We also shared a love for food and I remember going to Pietro's near my house for an amazing Italian meal - incredible scallop appetizer and fettucine alfredo with shrimp. We just could not stop commenting on how delicious everything was!

Hoss LOVED his family so much. I had the privilege of talking with Nadira after Hoss's passing. I send love to you, Nadira, and to your entire amazing family. I'm so glad Hoss did Team 2 with his lovely daughter. What an incredible experience for a young woman to share with their father. I'm sure you all miss him so much."

Robert Klein: "I worked closely with Hussain while preparing the NYTimes design competition and we met tor lunch periodically. This is a shock and makes me very sad to hear. He was a caring and thoughtful person and will be missed."

Alisa Chang: "Hussain was so kind and supportive in my early years at The New York Times. I’m so sad to hear of his passing."

Myrna Hamm: "So so sorry to hear of this news!!! Hussain was my next door neighbor growing up. It was just this past June that he reminded me of the time I gave him a ride on my mini bike. He was such a beautiful person with a big heart!!! RIP my friend."

Sarah Currie-Halpern: "Wow, Hoss?! This is the first I am hearing of his passing and my heart goes out to Nadira and his kids. He was one of the most kind, open, honest, and humble people I ever met in the business community. So giving of his time. We had many great conversations and I considered him a mentor. I remember him proudly sharing pictures of his ski trips with his kids particularly the summer ski trips. I am incredibly sad to hear this news. Rest in peace friend."
