My name is Jazmine R. Robinson. I am a 25 year old African American woman who is a first generation college graduate from Buffalo, NY. I received a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry from Canisius College (Buffalo) May 2014. Two months later, I relocated to Detroit, MI to complete a year of post-graduate service with a non-profit organization Boys Hope Girls Hope (BHGH) Detroit, which turned into three where I have been residing since. BHGH helps academically capable and motivated children-in-need to meet their full potential and become men and women for others by providing value-centered, family-like homes, opportunities and education through college. After attending a Jesuit Institution being men and women for others was a value I vowed to carry with which is why I completed the max years of service with this organization. I wanted to make sure I was setting the right example and practice what I preached. During the three years, I went back to school at Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD) to complete prerequisite courses I needed for the graduate program I was interested in. I wanted to set the example that nothing is impossible and dreams do come true. Growing up in an impoverished neighborhood and with a younger brother who is mentally challenged, I learned that everyone in the world is not equal. In my neighborhood people did not attend college or have a high school diploma. There was a lot of drug and gang activity and I could have easily fallen in the stereotype of an “uneducated ghetto black girl.” I promised that I would do better for myself and family. Help everyone that I could whenever opportunity presented itself. Everyone always doubted me my entire life. From the bullying and I had to fight to gain respect, from getting kicked out of one school and going to another which was worst. I was denied acceptance into my top choice high school because of my “behavior issues” to getting accepted into one of the top public high schools in our city (and they rarely accepted 2nd choice students). A lot of individuals doubted my intelligence because I lived in the “hood” and was “ghetto” and because I did not fit in with the rest of my classmates. Through all the bullying and doubt I was inducted into the National Honor Society and received a Full-Four Year Scholarship to Canisius College for leadership and academics which I was initially denied. Fast forward to today, through all my life experiences good and bad I was accepted to Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Physician Assistant Program in Cleveland, OH. This is a fulltime 27-month graduate program, upon graduation I will receive a Master’s of Science in Physician Assistant studies and be able to sit for the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE). If you are unfamiliar a Physician Assistant (PA) is a medical provider who is licensed to diagnose and treat illness and disease and to prescribe medication for patients. To get accepted into a PA Program is extremely competitive. Over 900 applications received, 96 chosen for interviews and 36 chosen for the class and I beat the odds and was chosen. As a PA I will provide healthcare services to underserved communities because I know first-hand what it is like to not have access to healthcare and providers that are empathetic and compassionate.
