BILL GRIFFITH'S KIDNEY TRANSPLANT

I have been accepted for an Organ Transplant Surgery at Piedmont Transplant Center in Atlanta, GA. This process of being approved for kidney transplant has been a very difficult but most beneficial process. I have been checked from head to toe, including cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, vision, dental, checked by social workers and visited by financial counselors. This is proving to be a very costly process. It is anticipated my transplant surgery cost will be at least $300,000.00, of which I must meet my insurance copay. The costs of anti-rejection medications, which will help to insure the success of my transplant, are anticipated to be from $1,100.00 to $1,500.00 per month for at least a year following my transplant. I am required to be in Atlanta, GA two days every week following my transplant surgery for medical evaluation and for monitoring any rejection of the new kidney. I have to be prepared to cover cost of travel, lodging and meals while in Atlanta, GA every week for at least 6 months following my transplant and possible longer depending on any rejection status. I will also incur additional copays on each follow up visit to the specialists at Piedmont. My costs the first year following transplant is expected to be at least $35,000.00. This is where I need your help. Piedmont Transplant Center asked that I can insure them of my ability to be able to afford the above out of pocket expenses prior to transplant. Any contribution you can make is greatly appreciated. I have been in end stage kidney failure now for many, many months now. It is my goal to find my living donor and have my transplant surgery before having to start dialysis. That window is closing ever so slowly. I only have about a 12% kidney function as of this date and am being monitored very closely by my Nephrologist. Dialysis will only add to the expenses of this process and I am hoping to avoid those expenses and the major physical changes my body will likely experience with dialysis. My Nephrologist agrees if I can hold my own and remain functional he believes I will get my kidney before dialysis. I have several people who have agreed to be tested to determine if they are a living donor match to donate me a kidney. My prayer is I will find my living donor because the national waiting list for a deceased donor kidney timeframe is now anticipated to be at least ten years.
