Hi this is Roger Smith, my husband Gary and I had an unexpected surprise here shortly before Christmas ... I got laid off from my job, which was our sole source of income (the entire position was eliminated, and they had nothing else to transfer me into). Some of you knew about that and helped us out at the time. Gary is on the autism spectrum, and while he has a support team helping him find work, it's very challenging, as some of you will know if you also have loved ones on the spectrum.
Nearly four months on, and while I've had a few good interviews and support from a good job agency, still no bites on a job. Savings and help from others was eaten up by a Murphy's law series of auto repairs we were hit with over several weeks. (It got to the point where the manager at our auto shop said only half joking, "I don't want to see you guys in here again!")
For healthcare, we went through a rather long, drawn-out process applying for Medicaid ... only ultimately to find that, even with the meager income I'm getting from unemployment (which doesn't quite cover what we need), we have "too much income" and so we don't qualify. Yes ... we're two of the millions of reasons (as we're sure many of you are too) why this country needs Medicare for all. Gary has ongoing issues with his back that need tending to, especially since any work he finds often calls for him to be physically active or to be on his feet a lot.
So life has pushed us close to the edge again, and we are deeply grateful if any of you can help us out to bridge the gap. I have another interview soon that I'm positive about, but you know the saying about counting chickens before they hatch. (And anyway, as many of you also know, many companies' hiring process can drag out for weeks, at least, before they make a decision.)
We know that a lot of you are going through tough times too, and your help means more than you know. No matter what, please love one another, this Easter and spring season let your love be the best thing you give to anyone. Love breathes life into the world.
God bless you all and thank you.
