My mom, Kathy, has been diagnosed with Laryngeal Cancer. She doesn't have a job or health insurance and needs help paying not only medical bills but basic living expenses.
The biopsy that lead to the diagnosis costs (with self-pay discount) over $27,000. That's not a typo. Seriously. That's what it costs before she even starts treatment.
If you've had a baby at Cape Coral Hospital, or had a child in the NICU at Health Park, chances are you've met, or been under my mom's care. Now she needs all of us to help in any way we can.
Here's her story:
After being in and and out of the hospital for almost a year, my mom lost her voice. The doctor's originally told her it was because of her pneumonia and that she was coughing so much she lost her voice. She was assured that this would go away shortly. After months of still sounding hoarse, and multiple trips back to the hospital, she was told that her loss of voice was because of her allergies. Her voice became so problematic that she couldn't work as a midwife, because she can't communicate with patients.
She left her job in the Florida Keys, and moved back to Cape Coral, where she started looking for work. Her voice kept getting worse and worse. Eventually, a doctor agreed to do a scope to see if her vocal chords were damaged. He found a tumor, and decided he wanted a CT Scan, which lead to a biopsy, which found Laryngeal Cancer.
She has already had to have 4 teeth pulled and needs a feeding tube inserted before she can start radiation or chemo (scheduled to begin November 26).
The doctor has let her know that she obviously won't be able to work during treatment, or for a few months afterward. This means she doesn't have any income whatsoever until at least a few months after treatment. Realistically, it will be at least another 6 months before she can get back to work.
On top of her medical issues, her house is in foreclosure, so she'll be looking for a (free) place to stay, and will need to be able to pay electric, water, etc.
She doesn't have money to pay her car note, car insurance, utilities, rent, on top of her mountain of medical bills that she's accumulated before even really starting treatment.
