My name is Paola Gonzalez and I am an undocumented student at Northeastern Illinois University pursuing a Bachelors in Science in Biology. These past couple of months I have been feeling overwhelmed by all the uncertainty around DACA, or about whether I’ll be able to attend Medical School and about whether or not politicians are going to step-up and finally agree on a Clean Dream Act.
The anxiety I have been feeling knowing that my future is in the hands of unscrupulous political players is unbearable, and my anxiety intensified on the night of March 17, 2018 when my mom received the call. The call that could have change my life forever; my father had a heart attack while he was at our local laundromat.
My father was alone - taking care of my family as always - without any warning, his body started to fail him. He was rushed to the MacNeal Hospital where the doctors decided it was necessary for him to get a stent procedure for his heart. Thankfully, this procedure was able to unblock one of the two blockages that were form, but besides the heart attack the doctors discover he was anemic. A colonoscopy and endoscopy was also done because he is being having internal bleeding due to the anemia and in order to determine where exactly is it coming from, further testing is require. However, due to his immigration status, the nurses and doctors are currently debating whether they should proceed with the CAT Scan he needs because he does not have health insurance! I just can’t anymore. Enough! As undocumented people, our lives are at jeopardy every single day even when we are on the verge of dying.
My dad is currently at the hospital hoping to fully recuperate and come back home to be with our family. I’m reaching out to you all because some of the tests and medications that my dad needs are very expensive without health insurance. Please help me keep my dad alive and healthy, so he can see me graduate from Medical School. Any donations that come from your heart to help with his medical expenses would be deeply appreciated it
