Our goal is to get Skyler to Disney for his 14th Birthday in October.
Every parent wants to give their child the world, and when you have four the world can become enormous quickly. Skyler, my oldest son is on the autism spectrum. Since he was very small, Disney has always been a source of comfort for him. The story lines, the characters, the magic. In a world that is set up for neurotypical people, he faces obstacles that many would not. Communication, friendships, any kind of interaction are very limited for him. Skyler is nonverbal so we see his world through what he writes and a majority of that is Disney centric. Skyler was diagnosed with autism at age 2. His diagnosis came after missing most of the milestones we had looked for, even those an infant should meet. He didn’t walk until he was almost 3, and he’s never spoken. Age 3 was when his Disney fascination began and at 13 I would love to make his decade old dream come true. He looks up scripts, studies the characters, knows the movies line by line and specifically wants to meet Doctor Hudson and Cruz Ramirez. It’s a challenge to coordinate any trip for our family of six but a trip to Disney isn’t a possibility for all of us right now. For my other three children it would be a fun trip, something different from the day to day. For Skyler, whose world is already smaller due to his diagnosis, this would be the trip of a lifetime. Not a trip to recall fondly one day, but a trip that would enrich his every day. We thank you for visiting our page, and for the consideration of your donation that will go to travel, accommodations, and park tickets if we are fortunate enough to fund this trip for him, for us. Of course I’ll enjoy being there with him, but the dream of watching Disney through his eyes is the best gift I could ask for myself. As a parent nothing compares to the joy of watching your child’s awe and wonder.
