Hi,
My name is Jason Ream. 15 months ago, my father, Jim Ream, was a perfectly healthy soccer-playing, hunting, fishing 50 year-old Fed-Ex courier (of 26 years). After noticing difficulty with swallowing and speaking clearly, he was tested for, and later diagnosed with, ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a.k.a Lou Gehrig's disease). He is now incapable of taking a single step without assistance, can't eat without fear of severely choking, can't speak without using his iPad (which is a very slow process), and has lost nearly all function of his hands and arms. He is in constant pain, but is courageously fighting this disease that, thus far, has a 100% mortality rate.
He and I were in the process of building my parents' dream home (a beautiful log home that is about 60% finished) which will be much easier for him to navigate in his wheelchair. Unfortunately, due to medical bills, we are unable to fund the remainder of this project. We have some amazing friends and family that are more than willing to help with the construction, but we need the materials to get it finished.
My dad was the primary bread winner and, now that he is on disability, his income has been cut in half. My mother, Tammy, works two jobs and I am currently working one and searching for a second that will still allow for one of us to be with my father at all times. Even after the combined income, we can't finish the house that would make things so much easier in so many ways. This house would significantly improve my father's quality of life. Our current home is very difficult for him to maneuver his wheelchair in. It would open our current home as an additional means of income. More than anything, it would be the realization of a dream that he and my mother have and that we have worked so hard to make happen.
