On Thursday, March 1st, our mother Arlene Turowitz underwent open heart surgery to replace an aortic valve and bypass another of her arteries. Originally in the hospital for routine pre-operative screening for a knee replacement, mom received word that her EKG showed some abnormalities. Cardiac surgeons soon discovered the damaged valve and informed us that she would need immediate surgery. Obviously, this news left us all in shock and struggling to find answers. Thankfully, the surgery was successful and we are happy that she is regaining her spirit and beginning to make small but significant improvements. Although she is through the most dangerous aspect of her medical issues, a long road to recovery lies ahead. This is where our GoFundMe story begins….
A native of Montreal, Canada, Arlene immigrated to the US in 2015 after the death of our father Irving. We all wanted Mom to be around and to let us take care of her, as she had done for her entire life. After a long process, we finally secured health insurance (Mass Health) for Mom, as well as a green card. Life was going to be fantastic and Mom was going to spend time with both of us as well as her granddaughter, Lauren. As sometime happens, life takes some unexpected turns.
As it turns out, the health insurance coverage we secured for Mom does not cover all of her medical bills. She will need rehabilitation and skilled nursing care once she leaves the hospital as well as durable medical equipment while she is at home. None of these expenses are covered, leaving her financially incapacitated and unable to pay for the care she requires to return to the quality of life she enjoyed just a few short weeks ago.
We are hopeful that this GoFundMe campaign will help Mom convalesce in peace without the specter of a heavy financial burden diverting her attention away from her recovery goals. Those goals that are so much more than medical or physical, but rather spiritual and familial. Mom needs to get back to her family and resume the mantle of mother, grandmother, friend, and caregiver. She is our true north and the epicenter of all that is good about us.
Over the past few days, we have received many warm thoughts and prayers from many people which have helped to ease the emotional burden of this ordeal. We are truly thankful to have such wonderful family and friends. While the emotional support will continue to be needed, what Arlene also needs right now is our financial support.
Please consider giving back to this wonderful woman who has given so much of herself to so many over the years. All donations, however small, will go a long way to helping Arlene regain her health, her strength and her spirit.
