Dearest family and friends,
As you have all surely heard and seen in the news, the Philippines, and more specifically, my home province of Leyte, has been completely devastated by Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda. The images of the debris and ruins, and all of the the destruction is simply impossible to grasp, and has brought me to nonstop tears over the past 4 days.
The above photo is Tacloban, Leyte. My older brother Lucio and his family lived in what was once a bungalow house, somewhere among these ruins. My other older brother David and his family, and my older sister Ellen, live 25 kilometers away in my childhood home in Jaro, Leyte. Their home has also been virtually destroyed, roof ripped completely off. By the grace of God, we have heard that though they have lost so much, they are lucky enough to be alive! For this we are eternally grateful!
As you have most likely heard, food and clean water is scarce. Destruction and death is everywhere. It is just unbearable to think of what they are enduring throughout this horrible nightmare. There is no power or communication. And it could be months before it is restored. We are simply relying on word of mouth that they are getting by day to day, with no idea where to begin the process of picking up the pieces.
We are taking a collection to help them and their communities to rebuild.
Our schools, church, and communities have been completely destroyed.
Please find it in your hearts to help us. No amount is too little.
