What: Ychsma Bioarchaeological Research Program (Please see expanded program description below)
When: Summer 2014, June 2nd-June 27th
Where: Ychsma-Inca sites such as Panquilma, Pachacamac, Pampa de los Flores, Huaca Huallamarca, Puruchuco, Armatambo, Huaca Pucllana, Pucusana, Historic Presbitero Maestro Cemetery, & many more
Most Importantly, How Will My Donation Be Used?:
Any donation amount you are able to contribute--$1 to $1000--will be used to cover the following items that are each researcher's responsibility:
1. Program fee of $3000 (this covers accommodations, ground transportation, research and site fees, museum access fees, as well as three meals per day for four weeks)
2. Airfare round trip from Phoenix to Peru, $2500-$4000
In addition, I am hoping to raise extra funds for the following:
1. In the event of a medical/travel emergency
2. To cover a months worth of bills so I am able to take this four week time period and dedicate myself fully to research without having to worry about how to make ends meet while I am 6,291 kilometers away
3. Spending money for admittance to any additional sites, museums etc. that are not covered under the program fee as well as any other incidentals
Expanded Project Description: The goal of the Ychsma Bioarchaeological Research Program is to promote the rescue, study, and conservation of archaeological human remains and associated contextual materials recovered from sites on the central Peruvian coast. This ongoing project focuses on the Rimac and Lurin Valleys, a region that held key prehistoric ceremonial and administrative centers for over a millennium, eventually becoming an essential part of the Inca Empire and subsequently the capital city of the Spanish Vice Royalty and the
Republic of Peru. Rapid urban expansion of the modern capital city of Lima poses a continual threat to archaeological sites and materials located in and around the metropolis and has led to salvage excavations of many important archaeological cemeteries and an abundance of materials in need of study. The Ychsma Bioarchaeological Research Program collaborates with local Peruvian museums and local and international archaeologists to develop cutting-edge research questions and methodologies for salvage
excavation projects and analyses of archaeological human remains and their contexts.
The 2014 field season will focus on human skeletal remains recovered during ongoing investigations by the Institute of Peruvian Studies at the Ychsma-Inca site of Panquilma (c. AD [phone redacted]) located in the Lurin Valley near an agricultural area just south of Lima. A small group of Ychsma Bioarchaeological Research Program volunteers led by Sara Marsteller, a doctoral student specializing in bioarchaeology, will provide efficient and professional bioarchaeological conservation services for tasks
required for the salvage and preservation of archaeological human remains. Examples include cleaning, identification, organization, and implementation of appropriate storage techniques for archaeological human skeletal and dental elements and their contextual associations. In addition, the team will collect
various skeletal and dental data used to estimate osteological sex, age at death, and minimum numbers of individuals, as well as other data relevant to Marsteller's ongoing bioarchaeological research in the region which investigates community identity formation through analyses of dietary practices, genetic relationships, body modification, and disease and health.
