In a nutshell this is what is going on.
In January 2013 my niece, Taylor (3.5 years old) was diagnosed with Apraxia and Developmental Delays. The doctors were hopeful that it was just the Apraxia causing the delays. After a year of therapy and speech she is still not able to speak.
They met with Taylor's treatment team two weeks ago and they said that she is showing signs of Autism.
In January she will go to Midlands Autism to get a full evaluation. Taylor's Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, and early interventionist specialist will come with them along with many documents from Taylor's special education preschool.
The treatment team also is looking into a special computer and the use of sign language to help Taylor. The Dynavox, computer system would speak for her and assist her in communicating and would greatly decrease her tantrums. The system to help her will cost them $12,000.
Please pray for Taylor and everyone that is working with her and for Matt, Lourdes and her older sister, Bre. It was a lot to hear, swallow and digest that last two weeks.
Please pray for this computer based system and sign language to help Taylor with communication and for the entire family to be able to learn.
Also please pray for Medicaid to be approved. It takes about six months to a year to get approval and she is basically without insurance despite her parent having blue cross/blue shield. Their private insurance does not cover a child with a disability and everything that was free ended when she turned three. Everything has been paid out of pocket for all her medical needs to this point along with paying speech, occupational, and early interventionist to work with her weekly. Matt and Lourdes both work full time, but the medical bills are adding up. It could be up to a year before Taylor is approved.
