OMNI Medical Mission Trip

Each year a
group called the Orphan Medical Network International, OMNI, organizes an
annual medical mission that sends a team to various countries to operate a
mobile medical clinic. Their aim is to bring medical care to orphans around the
world such as Russia, South Korea, Philippines, Romania, and Zambia. The team
is composed of several health care professional including doctors, nurses,
students, as well as non-medical volunteers (some of whom are students) for a
period of time during the summer in order to provide current medical supplies
and treatment to literally thousands of patients.
OMNI is a non-profit organization that gathers volunteers to travel and help those in need. I am honored to have been offered a spot and have accepted the opportunity to join the staff and travel to Ndola, Zambia next summer beginning on July 18th, 2014. Currently, I am a senior at Ferrum College with a major in Pre-Professionals Science with a double minor in Forensic Science and Chemistry. Previously, I was afforded an opportunity to travel with People to People Student Ambassadors to Europe for 21 days, as well as join the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Washington, DC. This past summer I was also able to shadow a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in Fredericksburg, VA before beginning a research position working in cooperation with a biological manufacturer Novozymes of Salem, VA. My career goal is to continue my education through graduate school and become a Medical Examiner eventually settling in the south-west region of Virginia.
This opportunity does incur a lot of expenditure including the cost of flights, hotels, required OMNI attire, meals, and other means of traveling outside of the county. I would personally appreciate any help towards these covering some of these expenses no matter how small the amount. It will go a long way in advancing this cause and experience of a lifetime at hand. Two of my classmates were able to participate last year in this medical mission, and both describe the experience as "life-changing" and I am so excited to live this for myself.
