Help Maew Be With Jacen During Chemo

No mother should have to work instead of being with their child during chemotherapy.My nephew,Jacen, was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He is just two years old. It was caught early and there is an 85% survival rate. It will still be a tough, long road ahead with up to three years of chemotherapy. Jacen is currently in Thailand with my brother Chris and his wife, Maew. They took their son to a hospital thinking that he was battling a second round of the flu, only to be told every parent’s worst nightmare: your child has cancer.They were advised against flying him home to the US for treatment. Therefore, they have started chemo treatment in Thailand. Unfortunately, Jacen is not a Thai citizen as he was born in the US. He currently has no insurance in Thailand. He had his first chemo treatment yesterday and was still all smiles afterward. Chris is unable to work on his travel visa and has battled health concerns of his own since being there including a chronic pain condition/injury and an unknown arrhythmia that was not able to be induced in the EP lab that he is still trying to get diagnosed and treated. Maew works full time and is compensated a base salary and commission. Thailand has NO FAMILY LEAVE. Maew is allotted 10 days off a year and up to a month if she herself is hospitalized. If she wants to be with her son during his treatment, she has to quit her job. The social program in place will give her 50% of only her base salary for 3 months. That’s it. In their son’s first few days of treatments they have been running around to the US Embassy and Thai consulate to explore all options of extending Chris’s visa, getting Maew an emergency visa to the US, and possibly getting Jacen dual citizenship so that he can get insurance. Of course, both Chris and Maew’s families will do everything in our power to help support them but it is a long road ahead with many medical bills. Jacen needs his mother, and his mother should not have to be anywhere other than by her toddler’s side when he is getting chemo therapy. Let’s give them a year. Help them to have at least a year together, worry-free of living expenses so that Maew can quit her job and be with her son. At approximately $2,000/mo, if we can collectively raise $24,000 - we give them a year. It sounds like a lot, but if 240 of their friends and family each donated $100 it would get us there. That’s one less dinner out this month. Not everyone can afford to give a $100 but every little bit helps. Please donate if you can and if you can’t, please still share their story.
