Push Through Pain Campaign

Donation protected
My name is James Owens, I am a 24 year old student currently completing a Bachelor of Education for Physical Education at Edith Cowan University. At the age of 20 I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis- most commonly known as a form of rheumatoid arthritis. Affecting just my right knee at the time I was unaware of the world of pain it was going to put me through for the rest of my life. Now having spread to my left knee and right ankle as well, even the most basic everyday activities can become a struggle, not to mention having to give up all my favourite sports as well. This disease causes the joints to become painful, stiff and often swollen (predominantly affecting the hands and feet of an individual) and over time can have an effect on one’s posture and mental state as well. I have undergone radio-active therapy, am on many medications, and have spent thousands of dollars on consultations with my Rheumatologist in attempt to suppress the pain on a day-to-day basis, and I'm one of the lucky ones.

I am just one of the many Australians who suffer from arthritis. Many of these people who do suffer from it are young children, some of these being as young as just 6 years old. We all know how important it is for children to get out and play amongst their friends and get involved in physical activity. This helps promote a healthy and active lifestyle as well as enables them to move freely. Unfortunately, for some, this is not the case. Arthritis in children is generally referred to as Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

Just like no child deserves to have a childhood riddled with pain, no parent deserves to see their child/children suffer. I, along with the Juvenile Arthritis Foundation are raising funds to find a cure and treat children suffering from Juvenile Arthritis and Uveitis. In order to keep the laboratory at UNSW open for one more year, as well as assist in the caring and treatment for the children suffering from Juvenile Arthritis/Uveitis, in excess of $100,000 needs to be raised. This money goes entirely towards research to hopefully one day find the causes for this disease, experiment with different treatments, help relieve the pain and eventually find a cure. Research at the UNSW will cease if funding is not continued, and this my friends is simply not an option. We need to help the thousands of children suffering from this disease.

On the 11th of November, 2016, the Push Through Pain Campaign will take place consisting of a walk from Beverley to Perth (approximately 120km) as well as a function (location TBA) filled with entertainment, music, and food and drink as well. In order to reach our target, we are looking for gifts which could be sold through auctions on the night, as well as corporate sponsorships. Various items of clothing will be made to promote the campaign as well as acknowledge those who have given corporate sponsorship. Please remember that every little bit helps.
