Vermont Studio Center Residency

Dear Friends,

Wow! I'm thrilled to share that I've been accepted into my first artist residency! And it's a great one! I will be at the Vermont Studio Center residency from June 10 - July 6 in beautiful Johnson, VT. The residency offers a private studio, private bedroom with shared bathroom, and three meals a day.  They have sculpture, printmaking, and painting studios and darkroom facilities.  The total cost for 4 weeks is $3950.00 and I have been offered an award of $1150.00 based on artistic merit and a work exchange program in which I will work for 10 hours/week.

I owe $2800.00 for my experience there, plus $400 for round trip travel.  I haven't decided yet whether I will fly or drive as it is a 13 hour trip, but either way $400 covers both.  The residency payment deadline is April 26, but I am still $1,100 short of being fully funded and donations can still be accepted.

For those of you who don't know, artist residencies are an invaluable addition to one's art career as they provide the space and time to experiment, explore, and create without time constraints or other responsibilities other than to oneself.  They are also a great resource for making connections to other professionals in the field who are attending the residency. These connections often lead to other residencies, exhibitions and visiting artist opportunities.

I'm including this photo of me with my friends who have been helping build a studio for me in our backyard.   As many of you know, my work for the past 10 years has been driven by being a mother and using the stuff and space of the domestic as my materials. This is changing as my role as a mother to a teenager is changing.  I am looking forward to the time and space offered at this residency as I look at it like an introduction to what I hope will become a new studio-based practice.

You can see from my CV that I am continuing to exhibit and travel to install and/or perform annually.  Most recent installations include this 12' tall sculpture at the Pearl Conard Gallery, Ohio State University, Mansfield, Ohio, last month (more photos of others here ).

And "Fabric of Life"  (below and here ) installed for the juried exhibition, "OH+5 Border Biennial" at the Dairy Barn Arts Center.

While the Vermont Studio Center does not require project-based proposals for acceptance, I plan to work on a variety of ideas ranging from collage drawings that I call "sculpture drawings", monoprints on newspaper in which I hide text and reveal a new 'story', and an audio project that I've started and been wanting to finish.

Artist friends who have been to residencies before say how rejuvenating and regenerating they can be for one's practice.  I am so excited for this opportunity!

Any amount is welcomed to help support me at this residency. Please email me with any questions and you can follow me on Instagram @courtneykesselart and on facebook .

With eternal maternal graciousness, gratitude, and love,
