Hello everyone!

If you’ve been following Jennifer’s progress, you know that just over a month ago she received the best possible news - a healthy, perfectly matching kidney was available and ready for her in Honolulu! The surgery went as well as it possibly could and the kidney is functioning as it should.

However, there were a couple of complications immediately after the surgery which resulted in a longer stay for Jennifer in the hospital and are now almost doubling the length of time she is required to stay in Honolulu for regular follow-up appointments before she is cleared to go home.

Kathy has, of course, been by Jennifer’s side every step of the way, and Ben has been keeping the home fires burning these past 5 weeks while Jen and Kathy have been on Oahu.

Those of us who know and love Jennifer, Kathy, and Ben know that they rarely ask for anything from anyone. However, they need our support now. This is Jennifer’s chance at a full life again, so there’s no turning back from or second-guessing this opportunity!

The expenses did not begin with the surgery. The path to this transplant began three years ago for Jennifer with a month in the hospital followed by regular dialysis that abruptly prevented her from having what most of us would call a “normal life” and left her unable to continue graduate school, hold a job, or live independently.

Likewise, Jennifer’s path to recovery does not end with this surgery. Though she can begin to see a future for herself once again, Jennifer’s sole focus for the next year will still only be the careful care of this new kidney, including monthly visits to the Transplant Center clinic on Oahu from the Big Island.

As a result of mounting medical and travel expenses, Jennifer, Kathy, and Ben have sunk everything they have saved into this. Jennifer is facing at least $10,000 in out-of-pocket expenses. This is a lot for any one to face, so perhaps if we all chipped in together, we can ease their burden with little pain inflicted on ourselves. We all know that Kathy and Jennifer would do the same for any of us if the tables were turned.

Likewise, if you have additional suggestions or offers of support, please let Kathy, Jennifer, or Ben know. They are so focused on the day-by-day healing process that they have not had the energy or time to brainstorm ideas on their own. They are interested in your thoughts and ideas!

Thank you for your continued love and support,

Jenn Rotermund, a friend of the family and one of Jennifer’s Transplant Advocates
