This GoFundMe is for 18-year-old Preston Harcourt to help provide support and to raise funds for the reconstruction of his leg.

Just after Thanksgiving of 2017, Preston was riding his moped home after his college classes in downtown Denver. He was hit by a driver that made an illegal turn in front of him. Preston sustained serious injuries including a punctured lung, a shattered left leg and multiple body injuries and contusions. Preston quickly developed multiple complications overnight and has been fighting to keep his leg through multiple surgeries, including placement of a titanium rod for stabilization, irrigation and debridement of the leg, fasciotomies to combat the compartment syndrome he developed, which is a dangerous condition that occurs when the pressure within the muscles becomes too severe and blood flow is compromised. At the risk of the muscle and nerves in his lower leg dying, the surgeons had to create two 10-inch long incisions in his leg that must remain open during his recovery. This creates a lot of extra complications as the wounds are constantly subject to infection, and as a result Preston has been in and out of the hospital almost weekly for emergency care.

One of the wounds was successfully closed about 6 weeks ago. The surgeons attempted to close the second incision through surgery but were unsuccessful resulting in a skin graft placement taken from Preston's upper leg. Unfortunately the graft failed due to infection and his insurance will not cover a second graft attempt. More than 2 months after the accident, Preston is still mostly bed-ridden with a wide open wound that must close on its own before Preston is allowed to attempt to walk again. Preston has been managing the pain of every other day wound vacuum changes to try and close the wounds faster but continues to be plagued with infection delaying wound healing and ultimately walking.  The wound vacuum is a burden as far as maintenance, but it's also a blessing. Unfortunately, Preston's Medicaid insurance will no longer cover the cost of the vacuum so it is now being paid for out of pocket by his family. Preston's surgeons estimate that his wound recovery will take another 4-6 months, followed by another 12 months of physical therapy to hopefully regain full use of his leg.

Preston, a 2017 graduate from East High School, has had to withdraw from the technical university that had just started in September 2017.  Preston is an excited Welding student and could not wait to start his career and life. All of his financial aid and scholarships were forfeited because he cannot continue his studies during his recovery process. This has been an incredibly difficult time emotionally and financially for Preston and his family because his parents are self-employed and have had to almost cease day-to-day business in order to provide constant care for Preston. Thankfully Preston's mother, Danica, is a registered nurse and has been trained in wound care and how to give Preston constant professional care but this comes with a price of not being able to work. There isn’t anything Preston’s family wouldn’t do for him, but it is becoming a lot to bear financially, physically, and emotionally for everyone involved.

We are looking to raise $15,000 for Preston to have the funds for the surgeons to reconstruct his leg, reshape the muscles, and provide skin grafts and scar revision as Medicaid does not cover this. Any contribution is greatly appreciated. We thank you all for sharing this page as well!
