The sentence was, “Gage has relapsed”. Relapse…a two syllable word that hasn’t stopped echoing in my brain. Gage was playing PS4 in the teen room at the hospital, just a couple of doors down. Gregg and I just stared numbly at each other…thinking the same thing…how are we going to tell him? He is so happy, laughing, giggling, liking school, karate, just finished a great soccer season, looking forward to basketball. He looks so healthy; he looks so good, so strong, so vital, and so indefatigable.

We told him that night…and it was horrific…to have to tell Gage that his AML was back, a nightmare for him to hear the words, a nightmare for us saying them. It was unimaginable; a conversation that no one should ever have to have with their child. He very understandably broke down.  And then we took his broken pieces and with our love taped him back together. And with his trust in our conviction that he will be well, that someday this will be a distant memory, our faith was restored.

Please be mindful, that this is a fight that his Dad and I know, and will persevere through, no matter what. Prayers, Positive Energy, Positive thoughts are a must as we gear up, to brush back cancer to never inhabit our son ever again. We are at a Boston Children’s Hospital and ask that if you are someone with rapport with Gage, please visit and lift his spirits… (contact Gregg or myself via PM to set up).
