India is calling...help Ani Akka answer!

At the age of 14 I went to India with my parents and younger siblings in tow. I went to find a Bharatanatyam (Classical South Indian Dance) Guru. I had already studied this style of dance for several years and had finally recognized it as my main passion in life. It gave me the ability to express myself, which was a challenge for the shy teenager that I was. It is beautiful, challenging, disciplined and above all it allowed me to enter a new dimension where I am fully immersed in a spiritual experience. Eventually I learned to invite my audience into this dimension and share my experience through performing. There is nothing in my life that gives me such fulfillment. Ok maybe my little boy ;-)

As the years went by I returned to India for more intense study sometimes 6 hours a day. I would go for 6 months out of the year. As I got older it became every other year for 3 months. And now that I am married with a house and a 4 year old son it has been over 5 years since I have danced in India. Every December my heart yearns for Chennai, during this time it is the center of the universe for Bharatanatyam dancers with performances all over the city every evening. I have even performed at some of these venues. Chennai is the capital of everything Bharatanatyam including stores that sell jewelry and tailor the costumes for our performances. Its where every Bharatanatyam dancer not only wants to be but NEEDS to be to stock up on dance attire and inspiration.

As the season approaches yet again, I have been dreaming of going to have an immersion of everything Bharatanatyam related. Now that my son is old enough and willing enough to stay behind with the loving care of my husband and my in-laws, I am really determined to go. However I had no savings for such a trip and no vision as to how I could make it. Leaving it to higher beings and putting my desires out there, I was suddenly blessed with what some call syncronicity.

I was recently invited to perform with the Mayapuris in India with my ticket cost covered!!!! I could hardly believe it and was scared to get excited. A chance to perform with such good friends and such talented performers AND go to India! When it was finally confirmed I thanked the Lord for hearing my prayer, and asked that I have the blessings and support of the community to make this journey a success, and to allow me to really make it live up to its true potential.

So with my ticket covered I would like to take this opportunity to spend some time in Chennai with my dance teacher, Srimati Indira Kadambi, learning and practicing what I love. To have a dance sabbatical, and come home overflowing with inspiration to continue my dance teaching and performing. This trip to India is such a blessing for me and I would like to really make the most of it. I need help covering practical expenses for my Visa, internal flights, room and board while I am there. Also to pay for dance classes, dance costumes and paraphernalia, and tickets to performances. I have been studying Odissi (Classical East Indian Dance) in Gainesville for 5 years and still dont own a proper costume or jewelry. So if possible I would love to purchase my first Odissi outfit. : )

If you feel at all inclined to help me in my endeavor I would greatly appreciate it. Those of you who know me, know that I am steady, a hard worker and very dedicated to this art form. Your contribution will not be wasted on me.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
