The Charlotte Forest is Saved!

Donation protected
If you have ever enjoyed South Worcester . . . please help us defend Clapper Lake and the Charlotte Forest.

In 1947, our father, Henry S. Kernan, had a vision. In a collection of abandoned farms in the Charlotte Valley he saw an opportunity to create an environmental legacy: a managed forest, providing open space, wildlife habitat, clean water, and solace for people to refresh their souls.

Perhaps you have come to South Worcester, paddled a canoe or fished in the lake, taken a swim, picked blueberries, seen a wild orchid or sundew growing in the bog, camped, cooked out, eaten our honey, burned our firewood, or hunted on our land. Or perhaps you share the vision of a man who foresaw the importance of preserving natural spaces for both wildlife and people. If so, we need your help now.

The Constitution Pipeline threatens to take a large swath of the Charlotte Forest to transport natural gas across New York State from the fracking fields of Pennsylvania to New England.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation cites the Charlotte Forest as a model of forest management. If the Constitution Pipeline is forced on our land that would end. The pristine lakes, wetlands, forest stands, and entire ecology would be severely degraded and the vision of our father destroyed.

There is an alternative route favored by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, the Army Corps of Engineers, and many politicians on all levels. Co-locating the Constitution Pipeline along the I-88 corridor would cause significantly less environmental damage and impact many fewer landowners.

Pipelines and pipeline infrastructure have enormous negative impacts on farmland, forests, and wetlands, and spur the spread of an industrialized landscape. The routes need to be chosen carefully to minimize destruction of the land.

The expenses of defending the Charlotte Forest are enormous, and the Henry S Kernan Trust finances are stretched thin. We need environmental consultants to mark the wetlands, and inventory the plants and animals to clearly demonstrate the catastrophic environmental impact of this proposal. Can you please help?

We are taking on this fight to get the pipeline moved to I-88 to not only defend the Charlotte Forest, but also to benefit all of our neighbors who would be impacted in a similar manner.

We are hoping to raise $8000, a fraction of what we have already spent. Please help us with whatever amount you can.If you prefer to donate with a check, please make it out to Patricia Kernan.
