At-home hospice care for Sarah Banks

In late September of 2017, Sarah visited the doctor for a persistent cough. Her doctor treated her for the cough, yet it still did not improve. A chest x-ray showed a few nodules that were nondescript and her doctor referred her to the pulmonologist In early October, Sarah visited the pulmonologist who ordered a scope biopsy, which also showed the lesions, but did not provide any additional information. The pulmonologist then ordered a lung needle biopsy to get more information. Before the second biopsy, Sarah had a sharp pain in her side and was taken to the hospital. She was kept at the hospital and treated for a separate issue, but while there, also had the lung biopsy performed. While awaiting the results of the biopsy, Sarah was released from the hospital in time for Thanksgiving at home with family.
Sarah enjoyed Thanksgiving with her family, but having just come out of the hospital, was weakened and tired. Her daughter came down that same weekend, having just learned that her mother had been in the hospital, and spent the weekend before returning to New York. At this point, Sarah was still caring for herself, but had the Johns Hopkins Home Care team coming in sporadically to provide medical support including PT and OT.
On Wednesday, November 28th, Kennette returned to Maryland and was joined by her cousin to take Sarah to the pulmonologist to receive the outcome of the biopsy. The pulmonologist gave Sarah, Kennette and Sarah's niece the news that biopsy showed cancer cells - mucinous adenocarcinoma- and referred Sarah to an oncologist. The following day, Sarah and Kennette traveled to the oncologist who explained the diagnosis and options. The location of the cancer was unknown, though it was affecting her lungs and any treatment would be a gamble and limit her quality of life. Either way, the cancer was terminal and her time is limited.
Being one of the strongest and bravest people ever, Sarah decided not to pursue treatment and face her diagnosis head on. She is enjoying the services and support of Gilcrest hospice services and time with family and some friends as she spends time at home with the care of her daughter. We have appreciated the outpouring of love and support from family and friends during Sarah's journey.
