To my friends, family, loved ones, business associates and anyone with enough heart to help out and make a difference...
I am embarking on a new adventure this year, and one that will allow me to utilize my skill set as a social worker along with my skill set as a circus performer in an effort to help displaced refugees in Athens Greece. This Summer I will travel to Athens as part of CircusAid, an all inclusive refugee support program that provides relief from mental anguish while helping build resilience through engagement in circus arts.
CircusAid was founded in 2016 by Jill Maglio, a certified occupational therapist. Jills research and work is grounded in combining occupational therapy with circus arts to address the unique health and well-being needs of individuals and communities. Through her work in refugee camps, Jill discovered there was a great need to provide constructive ways for refugees to occupy their time. The refugee experience can be uncertain, lengthy and trying. This stress and uncertainty contributes to mental instability and illness. When life is unstable and we have nothing to occupy our minds we worry, ruminate and fear an uncertain future. This is often the refugee experience which deteriorates mental health and motivation to move forward. Jill found that engaging refugees in circus arts lead to increased interaction amongst the community with laughing and smiling amongst children and adults alike. The objective is to provide respite from trauma and promote resiliency amongst displaced people living in these camps.
Jill and her team have done successful work in refugee camps in Europe over the last two Summers. This Summer I am looking forward to being a part of this project and having a hand in utilizing my unique skill set to help those in crisis living in refugee camps in Athens, Greece. In order to be part of these refugee efforts I have to fundraise money to support the expenses of my trip as well as the efforts of CircusAid as an organization for our project this Summer. I ask that you please consider donating to this cause and support me in my ambition to help displaced refugees.
