My brother Bob was diagnosed with stage 4 oral cancer about two years ago, he underwent emergency surgery and they removed part of his tongue, the floor of his mouth, and part of his jaw. While recovering from that, he had a stroke and remained in the hospital for several months. In the time since, he's undergone 2 reconstructive surgeries, and worked hard in both physical and occupational therapy to be able to walk and take care of himself. He has a G-tube for supplemental feedings because his speech and his ability to swallow are both affected by no longer having teeth or a complete tongue.
Currently there is no sign of cancer, but he still struggles daily to regain strength and the ability to communicate effectively. He will undergo one more surgery where they will either reshape his tongue or put in a "flap" so he can better form words, and move food and medication to the back of his mouth for swallowing. He will also need to be fitted for dentures designed for his special needs. The cost will be about $6000
He has been unable to work for the last two years because of his disability, and has been living on about $730 a month from SSDI. Medicaid has paid for most of his medical bills, but he has had to sell many of his belongings to pay his rent and other bills. As he awaits his last surgery, he is being told that his insurance will not pay for the dentures that he will need to allow him to speak and eat.
These dentures mean everything to him. They mean he will be able to eat and they mean he will be able to speak so people can understand him. But mostly, they represent hope, hope that he can return to the job that he loved, hope that he can communicate better with friends and family, and hope that life can go back to normal.
They would like to do his last surgery this spring and fit him for dentures at the same time, but we have to be prepared to pay for the dentures when he goes. The sooner we can raise the funds, the sooner he can have his surgery and get back to work and get back to life.
