Laid off and major car repairs

GoFundMe Jan 2018

Hi this is Roger Smith, my husband Gary and I had an unexpected surprise here just before Christmas ... I got laid off from my job, which was our sole source of income. Some of you knew about that and helped us out at the time.  Gary is on the autism spectrum, and while he has a support team helping him find work, it's very challenging, as some of you will know if you also have loved ones on the spectrum.

I was slowly advancing in my company, but still we struggled to get by and any savings were quickly used for car servicing or other expenses that are just part of life. (Some good news is that several openings have come up in my former company in other departments, which I've got a good shot at ... so hopefully I'll be on my feet there soon, I've got ongoing job search elsewhere too of course, plus a good agency looking out for me.)

Meanwhile however, Murphy's law seemed to follow us in recent weeks. Our laptop (main tool for job search) failed, had to be replaced. Gary's car in particular needed one serious repair after another. Road rock damage took out both headlights. The AC compressor seized up (as we were told happens sometimes in winter when it's less used), throwing a couple of belts in the process, and then during repairs, the battery also decided its lease on life was up.

We knew the brakes were well in need of servicing, then yesterday they began that metal-on-metal squeal when pads are gone, and when we took the car in today (we go to a trusted shop who has taken care of us for years), they showed us that one caliper had also frozen and the other was about to go. The service chief actually told us he hoped he wouldn't see us again soon, since we've been in so often lately!

So as you can imagine, even with help we received that has been eaten up quickly, and of course unemployment benefits are only about half of what I had been making, so all this has knocked us back a good deal.

If you can help out at all, we're immensely grateful and thank God for your generosity.

We want to give special thanks to our friends at The Christian Left, who have been the biggest part in helping us before (and some of our personal friends have helped invaluably too, which has meant a lot to us); we know that a lot of you are going through tough times too, and your help means more than you know.

Thank you so much, we hope all the best for you and that any troubles of your own will quickly turn around for good.
