Recently, I opened up about years of struggling with depression and multiple suicide attempts. Not only was I met with an outpouring and love and support for my story and journey, I watched a movement unfold under the post when many other people began to open up about their own struggles. Even more amazingly, others began to start an open dialogue and started supporting each other. After witnessing this miracle, I knew I had to take my story to an even bigger audience. This is when #50FORLIFE was born.
#50FORLIFE is a race adventure across the United States in 2019 where I will be running races from 50- 5k’s to Full Marathons within the calendar year. Running was a big part of what helped me get my life back after years of struggling, and I knew it was time to show others that they too could break free of the pain of depression.
The year will be spent on the road traveling continuously from state to state, so any donations will go to funding travel, race entry fees (mine will range from $25-$1,000 each this year) food, and other miscellaneous cost associated with the journey. (ie. Campground fees, mechanical issues caused by the over 100,000 mile journey, medical expenses if I were to sustain an injury during a run.)
Everyone is welcome to follow my journey on Instagram/Twitter @OleSourPickle or Facebook @ The Running Cactus . You can also help by purchasing #50FORLIFE merchandise from our store at runningcactus.com . A weekly vlog will be posted on YouTube every week, and will be accompanied by a weekly blog post on our website.
Be sure to join in on the fun. While I am excited for this adventure, I also realize it is coming with a heavy burden of spreading the word about mental health awareness. However, it’s our duty to help each other, because if we don’t... who will?
