Lambda Gamma Chapter of Sigma Chi
Our chapter, established in 2008 at Santa Clara University is committed to supporting those in need by creating and conducting philanthropy events throughout the year. Over the past three years, our chapter raised over $25,000 dollars for cancer research through both our token philanthropy event Derby Days and Santa Clara University's Relay for Life. We pride ourselves on making concerted philanthropic efforts in order to give back to the less fortunate and pledge to continue our contributions for the remainder of our chapter's bright future.
Our Cause: A Preschool for underprivileged children in the Philippines
Carmencita, the grandmother of our chapter's Philanthropy Chair, and her cousin Ellen have recently established a preschool for underprivileged children in the Cavite province of the Philippines. Ellen saw that many of the children in Barangay Santol (Santol village) were in need of an affordable education and care. Ellen went to the Department of Social Services for Children Affairs in order to establish a preschool for these children but was turned down because of lack of funding. So instead, with the help of Carmencita, Ellen was able to establish and fund a small preschool for these children whose parents are unable to afford other education options. The preschool is run on a day-to-day basis and is located on the grounds of a small farm in Barangay Santol. The preschool costs five pesos a day for parents that can afford it but needs much more funding in order to provide these children with the care and education they need. The preschool is in need of books, writing utensils, school supplies, other educational materials, a playground, bicycles, uniforms, rain coats & boots (they don't attend school when it rains), and other clothing.
On Friday Novermber 8th 2013, our chapter is teaming up with the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority in order to provide this preschool with as many of the requested supplies as possible. Our event, entitled the "Kappa-Chi Classic" is a powderpuff football game in which both coaches and players must bring school supplies in order to participate. Through the use of this funding platform we hope to raise money in order to buy more of these educational materials along with the pricier items such as the uniforms, rain apparel and possibly bicycles. The funding for these supplies will end on Friday, November 8th and once the money is received our chapter will be using it to both buy and ship all of the materials to the preschool.
