5052 Community Mural Yellowknife

Donation protected
Makerspace YK, in partnership with the Foster Family Coalition of the Northwest Territories, is running a new project called the 5052 Community Mural project. It involves artists and youth working together. The goal? To create a collaborative mural in downtown YK. The mural will be on the corner of 50th Street and 52nd Avenue, hence the name, the ‘5052’ Community Mural.

We have received a majority of our funding through the RBC Future Launch Fund. This covers the cost of material (plywood, paint), and pays four artists and five youth for all of their contributions. Our team is a bit bigger though!!! We have one more artist, and two more youth, who will work hard to make this an amazing community mural. Our artists have many decades of combined experience, and have unique styles that will come together to create something amazing. Our team includes Michael Fatt, Amelie Duval, John Rombough, Terry Pamplin, and Christina Moore.

The artists are mentoring 7 youth team members, who are between 11 and 19, and are learning a lot about the artistic process, while also getting the opportunity to be more engaged in the community. Many of the youth are also getting involved with documenting the project, by taking control of the video camera and audio recording gear that is available!

The team has been meeting every Saturday since the beginning of January 2020, have already started to outline designs, and have all the materials prepped and ready to get going. We expect the painting to be done by spring 2020, and the mural will be put up in the early summer of 2020.

We are fundraising so that we can ensure to pay all of our artists and youth for the hard work that they are putting into this project, which will become a part of Yellowknife's identity for many years to come. Please consider donating! This project will add some colour and beauty to the city of Yellowknife's downtown core, and it is so meaningful that such an incredible team of youth and artists came together to make it happen.

All of the donations received here will be used to pay the artists and the youth for their work. Artists are paid a lump sum at the end of the project, and youth are paid hourly. The funds will be withdrawn from this donation site by the project coordinator, Korry Garvey, and will be given in cash to the youth weekly depending on the hours they put into the project. If we reach our goal of $3000, 1/3 of the funds will go towards paying the youth, and the remaining 2/3 will be paid to the artists. With our current funding through the RBC Future Launch fund, we have a system for all youth to date and sign every time they receive any money for this project so we have a record of it! It not only ensures that we know how much money has been paid out, it also teaches financial skills for youth!
