Help Jumpstart a Restaurant for Puerto Rico

My name is Andy Diaz.
For the past 12 years I’ve been the owner and operator of Blackbird
Wine shop – Atomic Cheese and Daruma Sushi + Sake in Portland, Oregon.
My grandmother, Juanita Melendez, infused her love of Puerto Rican food and culture with me from a very young age. She passed away when lengthy power outages plagued Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.
Since then, I’ve had a few pop-ups that have allowed me to share the food of my family with Portland, and now it’s time to open a restaurant, Lechonera PR-2, to pay tribute to Juanita’s love of food, and her generous spirit.
I need your help to make this dream a reality.
Just two weeks ago I served my last sushi roll and have begun converting Daruma to PR-2.
The new restaurant is named for the interstate that stretches across the island, and although not as a busy as a highway, PR-2 is located on a bustling stretch NE Killingsworth which will see an increase in foot traffic as more than 40 new apartments are being built just next door.
AN ADDITION TO PORTLAND'S VIBRANT FOOD CULTURE
PR-2 will not just offer Portlanders an opportunity to taste arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas), platanos maduros (ripe plantains), and the Mofongo that my dear friend Anthony Bourdain called a “tower of goodness.” With every meal purchased diners will be supporting Puerto Rico. A portion of the restaurant’s annual proceeds will be donated to Banco de Alimentos de Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico's Food Bank.
Here’s how you can help:
Donate $100 to this campaign and you will receive your "Honorary Puerto Rican" Card
which will provide you with a 10% discount any time you make a purchase at PR-2
or Blackbird Wines. You will also receive a free meal shortly after we open the
doors to the new restaurant.
Donate $50 or less to this campaign and you’ll be invited to attend a special preview
event to see the new space and sample some of our favorite dishes.
Your contributions will fund the purchase of new equipment, interior design
modifications and cover the lease and labor expenses during this transition.
With your help, we will be eating mofongo in no time.
