50 for 50 for OperationBreakthrough

Gofundme.
I’ll try my best to keep this super short.  I’m turning 50.  Soon.  And I’m looking for some help.  I’m not looking for gifts, a party, or even a note of ‘congrats’ on Facebook.  I’m asking for your assistance in helping me raise money for a super important cause.  And no small sum… I’m hoping to raise $50,000.

On my 50th birthday, March 6th, I’ve decided to run 50 miles and then bike 50 miles.  I’ve ‘run my birthday years’ a few times in the past, and am in decent shape, so by all measures really do believe I will complete the task.  The plan is pretty simple… wake up early, knock out 20 miles or so on the treadmill before sunrise, eat breakfast with the family, and grind out the next 30 outside.  Eat a burger and shake, hop on the bike and get the 50 cycling miles done.  (BTW, if anyone is looking for something to do that day, give me a shout).  The weather has always worked out for me, hopefully this year will be no different.  As long as there isn’t ice on the ground, should be fine.

The cause is one we will care about… trying to level the playing field for those that are not as fortunate as most of us reading this.  I believe this can only happen with early intervention (0-6 years) of education and wrap around family services, to give those kids the best shot possible of leading a successful life.  The vehicle I’ve chosen is Operation Breakthrough.  Founded 40 years ago by two amazing Nuns, the center currently takes in over 400 children every day and provides them an oasis of stability and learning, in an otherwise very unstable world.  I’ve had the honor over the last 10 years of serving in multiple capacities there, including both being a Board member and also chairing the Board.  I have seen firsthand the difference the center makes in the lives of these children.  The disadvantages/headwinds these children face come from no choice of their own.  Over 90% of the kids live below the poverty level, 20% are homeless and almost all come from a single parent household.  They need our help.  An effort is underway to increase capacity from 400 to 700+ children by building more facilities, and I’d like your assistance in helping them achieve their goal.  Read more about Operation Breakthrough and the project in the links at the bottom of the page.

Back to the $50,000.  As an incentive for you to get involved, I’m personally matching the first $25,000 in donations.  I’ll run/bike, you donate, and together, we can all make a difference.

Thank you!
