“Life Throws You a Curve”
Funny, you’re rolling along, taking life as it comes, then it happens………
A loved one or close friend is diagnosed with the dreaded “C" word. CANCER? Surely not! That only happens to other folks! After getting over the initial shock, you naturally want to help any way possible.
Our friend’s name is Ken Zally. He is 70 years old. His wife's name is Nancy. They have two married daughters, Gretchen and Jessica, who have blessed them with two grandsons and a much-anticipated granddaughter on the way.
Here's an update on Ken’s cancer battle:
· January 2017, he began experiencing a pain in his left side
· By April, his appetite diminished and he lost 25 pounds.
· After hospitalization and the running of many tests, his doctor discovered he had Mantle cell lymphoma, a rare form of cancer.
· This cancer spreads fast, with median survival rates ranging from 1-4 years with a 22% chance of remission.
· The cancer showed most prominently in his spleen.
· The doctor elected not to operate, but to treat the cancer with chemotherapy. This involves receiving injections four days a week for up to three hours each session.
· The drugs cost between $4,000 and $15,000 per treatment.
· His insurance pays for most of it, but his out-of-pocket costs have reached $9,000 already with three months of treatment to go.
· With co-pays, CT scans, blood tests, drugs and other related medical expenses incurred during the chemotherapy phase he’ll likely owe as much as $18,000. This doesn’t include additional tests and treatments which may be required after the chemotherapy.
Ken is in a tough spot and cannot face this alone.
Since Ken and Nancy are both retired with limited income, I am humbly asking for your help.
In addition to your thoughts and prayers, his family needs your financial assistance.
Ken was not comfortable asking for money, but we all know this can happen to anyone. Each one of us can hit rough spots in our lives where we need support.
Ken is staying strong and fighting this disease. In his words,
“You have to choose: do I give up and accept the inevitable, or do I step up to the plate and learn to hit the curve? I choose the latter.”
